3 LinkedIn Mistakes That Are Costing You Clients (and How to Fix Them)

LinkedIn Mistakes

If you’re using LinkedIn to grow your business, build credibility, or attract new clients- great. But here’s the thing: you might be unintentionally sabotaging your results.

Too many business owners, consultants, and sales pros show up on LinkedIn without fully leveraging it because they have no strategy. So you may be active… but sadly invisible.

So let’s fix that so you’re becoming for visible, building credibility and generating more income.
Here are 3 common LinkedIn mistakes I see—and what to do instead so you can boost visibility, spark conversations, and create real opportunities in 2025.

1. Ignoring LinkedIn Invitations Equals Potential Missed Connections

That growing list of pending invitations? It’s more than digital noise—it’s your next conversation starter, referral, B2B lead generation or collaboration waiting to happen.

Why it matters:
Responding to LinkedIn invites is one of the easiest ways to expand your network with purpose. But if you’re not opening or reviewing these requests, you’re missing out on high-quality connections.

Second, when you connect with someone new, LinkedIn shows their posts in your feed for about a week giving you the opportunity to engage with their posts during that time which extends their visibility in your feed. Using LinkedIn for business means you should have a content strategy, part of your strategy is staying top of mind with new connections and this is a simple way to do just that!

Action Step:
Take a few minutes daily to scan your invites. Look at who’s reaching out. When appropriate, reply with a quick “Thanks for connecting—curious what brought you to my profile?” It opens the door without feeling salesy. This is an effective LinkedIn networking strategy – then watch for their posts and leave a comment keeping you on their radar.

2. Skipping the Message Inbox Equals Lost Lead Opportunities

Yes, your LinkedIn messages are full of spam. But hidden among the noise? Real people who want to talk business. So it’s time to ‘get over’ spammers and focus on connections that matter.

Why it matters:
Business development is about relationships—and some of the best ones start in your inbox. Ignoring messages means you might miss podcast invites, speaking opportunities, referrals, or warm introductions.

You can use the messaging feature on LinkedIn to stay top of mind with strategic people in your network, send a calendar invite or leave a short voice message from the mobile app.

Action Step:
Spend 5 minutes every day or two and go through your message box, filter out spam fast—but don’t overlook a genuine DM that could lead to a conversation worth having. Respond to noteworthy messages and then choose some high-value connections to send a message.

3. Only Clicking “Like” Equals Low Visibility & Engagement

Likes are lazy. Comments are powerful, they are LinkedIn gold!

Daily commenting can increase your profile views, get more invitations to connect and can gain up to a 90% increase in people who want to Follow you. This means for visibility which is the #1 struggle I hear from the majority of my customers!

Why it matters:
When you leave a thoughtful comment on a post, you’re not just engaging with the creator—you’re showing up in their network’s feed. It’s a visibility multiplier. More eyes on you equals more recognition, trust, and conversations.

Action Step: Stop scrolling!
Start leaving 3-4 thoughtful comments a day. When you get in a groove leaving more comments will spread your visibility even further. Ask a question, add a perspective, or cheer someone on. It builds relationships and your credibility.

Bottom Line: Visibility Is Currency on LinkedIn

You don’t need to spend hours a day on LinkedIn to grow your influence, credibility and income for your business. But you do need to show up with intention.

Small actions – responding to invites, checking your inbox, and commenting on posts—can open doors you didn’t even know were there.
