How important is LinkedIn profile for job seekers? According to LinkedIn, 97% of HR and staffing professionals use LinkedIn for recruiting. Other sources also report that a high percentage of recruiters use LinkedIn for finding and vetting job candidates.
The better you can hone your LinkedIn knowledge will lead to faster job success. Here are 3 basic tips to start updating your LinkedIn profile and improve your chances of being found.
1. HEADLINE/TITLE: Clever is not going to get you found
Recruiters use keywords to search for candidates, and your headline is prime real estate for these terms. Be sure your title is a common title.
The more relevant keywords you have in your headline, the higher you’ll come up in a search.
2. ABOUT section
Be concise with your career story – 3 short paragraphs are plenty.
Include what makes you credible, a few career highlights that you can quantify and weave in with your strongest skills. If the job requires technology skills, bullet point those technologies that are relevant to the next job you want.
Your goal is to let a recruiter know you have the qualifications.
3. EXPERIENCE: Past Roles
This should align with your resume. With that said, keep details to a minimum. Recruiters tend to scan, so I recommend 3 bullet points with quantifiable accomplishments and demonstrated skills. Show & sell yourself! The goal is to get the recruiter to want to learn more through an interview.

Hoping a recruiter finds you on LinkedIn is like hoping a bird will land on your outstretched hand while walking in the park. While it’s possible, it’s not the most reliable or proactive strategy.
